Three-Stage Vapor Recovery Equipment: Working Principles and Maintenance
Understanding how your three-stage vapor recovery equipment works and how to maintain it is essential for maximizing its lifespan and ensuring consistent performance.
How Three-Stage Vapor Recovery Works
The core technology used in most modern systems is condensation + adsorption:
- Vapor collection: The system draws vapor-air mixture from the underground storage tank ullage space
- Compression: A compressor increases the pressure of the vapor mixture
- Cooling/Condensation: The compressed vapor passes through a heat exchanger, cooling it below the condensation point. Fuel vapors turn back into liquid while air remains gaseous
- Separation: Liquid fuel is separated and returned to the storage tank
- Adsorption (polishing): Remaining trace vapors pass through an activated carbon filter for final capture
- Exhaust: Clean air (≤25g/m³ VOC) is vented to the atmosphere
Maintenance Best Practices
- Daily checks: Verify system operating status on the PLC panel; check for alarm indicators
- Weekly inspections: Inspect for unusual noises, vibrations, or leaks; check condensate drain
- Monthly service: Clean heat exchanger fins; check compressor oil level; inspect filters
- Quarterly maintenance: Replace activated carbon if needed; calibrate sensors; test alarm functions
- Annual certification: Professional inspection and emissions testing to maintain regulatory compliance
